What is "Off the Schneid"?

Well, if you are looking for a definition of "Off the Schneid", you may be in the wrong place, but I feel that I should add it to this post in case this is found when searching for a definition. I have always understood it to mean: Ending a "slump" in competition (usually sports). Often used in baseball. An example would be a player starting the season 0 for 20, then "getting off the schneid" by getting his first hit.
